Cymdeithas Etifeddiaeth Cymry Glannau Mersi

The Society was set up in 2000 with the aim advancing the knowledge of the public and Merseyside in particular as to the culture, language and heritage of Welsh people in Merseyside. It has produced bilingual plaques to mark the contribution many Welsh people to Welsh life on Merseyside and further afield, and also held a series of successful festivals celebrating the contribution of notable individuals or activities.

From October 2022 the Society will also be offering a monthly programme of events in English at the Liverpool Welsh Centre to complement the regular Welsh language cultural events which are held there throughout the year.

The Story of the Liverpool Welsh

An illustrated talk in English by Dr D Ben Rees - admission free

This talk will describe the contribution which Welsh people and their culture have made to Liverpool since they first started to move to the town in large numbers from the late Eighteenth Century onwards. Together with the Irish community the Welsh have made Liverpool into the most Celtic of English cities. It is still regarded by many Welsh people as the unofficial capital of North Wales.

Dr D Ben Rees was born in Llanddewi Brefi, Ceredigion, and has been the leader of the Liverpool Welsh community since 1968. He is well known as a local historian, as a Presbyterian minister, and as the author of nearly one hundred books.

Giraldus Cambrensis: gossiping and crusading around Wales, 1188

An illustrated talk in English by Mike Farnworth with special guest - admission free

Giraldus Cambrensis was a priest, an author, and the grandson of a famous Welsh princess. In the early spring of 1188 he escorted the Archbishop of Canterbury on a six-week trip around Wales, recruiting men to fight in the crusades. Four years later he wrote a book about their journey.

This talk gives a glimpse of life in an independent Wales during the age of the princes, illustrated by maps, pictures, stories, and the words of Giraldus Cambrensis himself. Although most of his book is true, Giraldus couldn't resist also including improbable tales which he heard during his travels.
